Roman brooches

Roman bow brooches or fibula are probably the commonest type of Roman jewellery found on archaeological sites. It is thought that these brooches were used to fasten cloaks or other item of dress. Bow brooches usually belonged to the wealthy, though they have been found on all types of Roman site. There were various other types of brooch during the Roman period such as the pennanular brooch and the plate brooch.
