As soon as the Roman army arrived in Britain, they built forts in important points across the whole country. These forts often acted as temporary bases called marching camps and started as simple earth bank and ditch defences. More permanent forts were built with large timber fencing (called a pallisade) that was sometimes replaced by stone walls and gateways at a later date. A small town called a vicus would often develop next to a fort to provide goods for the soldiers. http://www.channel4.com/history/timeteam/snapshot_romanforts.html
