Roman grey ware and local pottery

Fragments of Roman grey ware are probably the most common type of pottery found on Roman sites in Britain. The term grey ware is used to describe various types of locally produced pottery that were made in many different areas of Britain (as opposed to the imported samian ware). The pottery was grey because of the type of clay that was used. Most grey wares that have been found in Bristol were made in Congresbury in Somerset. During the Roman period grey ware pots were used in most kitchens for cooking and serving food. http://www.potsherd.uklinux.net/atlas/Ware/SAVG
