The Early-medieval period

(410AD-1065AD)

We know very little about Bristol in the period after the Romans left (about 410AD) and before the Normans arrived in 1066.
Some of the best evidence for this period is in the names of some of the places from the time. Bristol was founded in about 1000AD. The name Bristol comes from the Saxon or Old English name Brigstow meaning 'meeting place by the bridge' or Bridge Town probably refering to the bridge across the Avon that stood close to the existing Bristol Bridge during the medieval period.
