During the Tudor period Bristol merchants were mostly trading with merchants in Ireland, Spain and Portugal. Ships would leave Bristol with cargoes of cloth, animal hides or metals such as tin and lead. These goods would be traded for goods like wine, oil, fish, sugar, soaps and spices. It is recorded in the Smyth's accounts that the Mary Jane sailed out of Bristol on the 13 March 1550 with cloth for Andalusia and returned in December with wine and oil.
