After the war many British families hosted German children whilst their parents rebuilt their lives. This generosity was a precursor to the more formal twinning arrangements.

German prisoner of war, Harald Gorling was befriended by Gilbert Dicks whilst at a camp in Bristol during the Second World War. After he returned to Hannover, he wrote to Gilbert and his family thanking them for their kindness. It is clear that they had become good friends.
